Waning Dark Moon, October 14th-16th

  • Waning Dark Moon: Virgo-Libra
  • Begins: October 14th-16th
  • Element: Earth/Cardinal
  • Modality: Mutable
  • Planetary Ruler: The Sun/ Mercury

The Waning Dark Moon is the phase when it’s still displaying a thin silver line, at the verge of becoming invisible in the night sky as it approaches the Sun. Symbolically, it represents the declining phase of the cycle of life, beginning two nights before the New Moon, which is when it has lost all of its illumination. Thus, this phase prepares us for the rebirth and new beginning that comes after the exact conjunction of the two luminaries.

The Waning Dark Moon represents the time when we’re heading back to the cave, when we return from our journey through the outside and head towards our inner/underworld. As the energies decay, we are invited to rest, recharge, let go of something and close negative cycles, break old patterns, release from energetic or body toxins, banish what we want out or cut the cords that attach us to the past. It’s when we enter the Crone phase, commune with the Dark Goddess and meet with our shadow side.

October comes with two full moons, one at the beginning and one on Samhain, Mars & Mercury retrograde and with the powerful and challenging cardinal cross between the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Pluto. Hence, it’s a really chaotic and intense month, especially after the New Moon in Libra of October 16th. However, its energies will be provoking the needed nuclear reaction to transmute a situation in our lives, for it’s when what has been heating up this year will reach its boiling point. It’s the month when everything we’ve been suppressing and hiding underground may emerge to the surface as announced by the Full Moon in Aries of October 1st. However, its energies will be impulsing us to transform our lives and head to a new direction. Now we meet the Waning Dark Moon phase after this Full Moon, making it the final time to release and heal from what was illuminated as a new emotional cycle will initiate soon.

The Full Moon occured right beside Chiron while Mars Retrograde, the significator of this lunar event, was with Black Moon Lilith, bringing to a culmination the cycle that initiated with the New Moon, Chiron and Lilith conjunction in Aries of March 24th 2020. This lunar event initiated an emotional cycle of healing where there is wounding, oppression and enragement because of the suppression of the expression of the self. Hence, the area of life in which it transited in our natal chart hinted where we may have been experiencing this and the shadowy, chaotic and destructive influence of Lilith. However, this has all been for the purpose of confronting our shadow and our wounds in order to heal and transmute the darkness into our light.

Therefore, this Full Moon finally awakened the warrior within that has been wounded and liberated the dark feminine that has been repressed. It shed light to the unhealed and to the shadow aspects of the self that are being projected onto the other. Finally, as this lunar climax happened during Libra Season and before the New Moon in Libra, which will be initiating a new cycle for healing ourselves in order to improve our relationships, it hinted that this was key in order to restore the balance and harmony as it’s the root where all conflict may stem.

For instance, with this Waning Dark Moon during Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio, the time has arrived to descend to your inner underworld, confront your shadow, the suppressed pain that emerged and the revealed unhealed wounds for the purpose of beginning your process of healing. This Full Moon may have made you felt things more deeply and if what you felt was a particular fear or sadness, jealousy, pain or anger triggered by the thought of something that occurred, it was telling you precisely what you need to heal, release and liberate from your energetic body in order to restore harmony in your life.

Examining your feelings, your triggers and projections are the key that will open the doors to your subconscious and your shadow. The New Moon in Libra will be occurring right opposite Mars and Black Moon Lilith, so this is a process we will be working on for six months, so it will be a time to integrate the shadow into your light and begin transmuting the pain into your strength and your wisdom. Mars comes retrograde in the same area of your life in which the Chiron and Lilith conjunction occurred. This indicates a time to begin taking an active role and making changes in your approach, beginning to speak up or taking action as remember that this is where there may have been suppression of the self and passiveness.

The Waning Moon will be first transiting through the sign of Virgo conjuncting Venus and opposing Neptune while aligning harmoniously with Saturn, the planet of witches, Pluto, the god of the underworld and Jupiter, the planet of abundance. With this energy it’s perfect for rituals focused on banishing, protection, healing and releasing the old in order to start anew. As Mercury, the ruler of Virgo, will be retrograde in Scorpio, it’s also excellent for journaling and writing all you want to release before beginning this new cycle.

You can also take this time to cleanse, purify and organize your physical space, dispose of what you no longer want, the old and the damaged in order to make space for the new. This will act as a message to the universe that you’re open for receiving and attracting what you desire. A ritual bath for cleansing stagnant or negative energies, a spiritual floor wash and dusting your altar, are supported activities with this Waning Dark Moon. When the Moon changes to Libra on the 15th, then it’s perfect to begin your shadow work!
